Every podcast episode usually ends with a wrap section but this one doesn’t. Know why? Because the episode is so jam-packed with information that the wrap would have taken another ten minutes.
In this episode, join Amrut as he speaks with Professor Balaraman Ravindran about his journey from being a student at IIT Madras, starting the RL and ML courses and then becoming the first Faculty Adviser at CFI. That’s just the beginning. The Professor and Amrut deep dive into the interdisciplinary nature of AI and how AI has seeped into almost all academic disciplines.
“A few decades back, as a student, Professor Balaraman Ravindran was fascinated by the idea that computers may beat humans at hashtag#Chess. The game/sport was popular in Chennai and Tamil Nadu and Vishy Anand was just breaking into the world circuit. It led him to pursue research in the field of Reinforcement Learning (RL).
Now, not only is he a prominent RL researcher, but also a loved (and popular) teacher in ML/RL/AI, the head of multiple centres of AI, and the HoD at Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI, IIT Madras. I travelled with the professor in Bengaluru recently and we bonded over our love for black coffee. His journey from becoming curious about a machine that could learn chess to now being an inspiration for students stepping into machine learning and AI is fascinating and I think his sense of humour just added to the entire conversation.”
