"What job would you do if you were not paid any money to do it?"| Sriram Kalyanaraman

Episode Summary

In this episode of the Best Place to Build Podcast, Amrut talks with Sriram Kalyanaraman, who has built something very unconventional. Sriram has not built a product or an exciting startup, but a school for transformation.

Watch as Sriram shares his fascinating path from Computer Science at IIT Madras to McKinsey consulting, Harvard Kennedy School, and ultimately founding the Amaidhi School for Transformation. At the heart of the conversation is the groundbreaking "Happiness, Habits and Success" course he co-developed at IIT Madras, which now reaches 600+ students every semester. Sriram explains how his course uses experiential learning to break these cycles, helping students discover that happiness and success can coexist rather than compete.

If you have ever thought about the pressure on students to score well, perform well, get a good job in a prestigious company, and how all of this could impact their mental health, this episode is a must-watch for you.

Amrut’s Comment

"Sriram helps people build the best version of themselves - skilled, resilient, maybe even anti-fragile.

It's unconventional because Sriram studied Computer Science at IIT Madras from 2003-07, and he's moved far away from data structures and algorithms. Sriram followed convention once, when he joined IIT Madras CSE after getting AIR/CRL 51. That's it. Never again.

He is also partly responsible for the Happiness Habits and Success course at IIT Madras (led by Prof. Sivakumar aka Anbudan Siva) - something we discuss at length in the podcast, along with the mental health crisis that is unfolding around us.

I really can't summarise this podcast in any possible way - you need to watch it. But I will leave you with my favourite part. We discuss how we have "gamified" everything, including joy. And how we earned 7 joy points (+1) while recording the podcast."
