Prof. Krishnan Balasubramaniam
About Us
Professor Krishnan Balasubramanian is an Institute Chair Professor in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras and a globally recognized expert in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). With over 33 years of experience in the field, he specializes in using advanced technologies like X-rays, ultrasound, infrared imaging, radar, and terahertz imaging to inspect engineered structures without causing damage.
Prof. Balasubramanian has been instrumental in transforming IIT Madras's research and startup ecosystem. He served as Dean for Industry and Consultancy Sponsored Research (2012-2018) and was key in developing IIT's incubation policy. He has co-founded several successful "hard tech" startups including Dhwani Research & AI, Planys Technologies, Detect Technologies, and Zyma Analytics, which collectively employ over 1200 professionals and serve clients like ISRO, Tata Steel, Shell, and Exxon.
He holds 480+ technical publications, including 260 refereed journal papers, 30 patent filings, and has guided 25 PhD and 49 MS students. His outstanding contributions have earned him prestigious awards including the Roy Sharpe Prize (2012), Abdul Kalam National Technology Innovation Fellowship (2017), and Lifetime Achievement Award from IIT Madras (2018).
He currently serves as President of the Indian Society for Non-destructive Testing, Editor-in-Chief of multiple international journals, and Professor-in-Charge of the Gopalakrishnan Deshpande Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, where he leads the i-Corps program that has supported over 1,700 entrepreneurs and incubated approximately 140 companies.
